Welcome to Year 6!

A very warm welcome to Year 6 at Ivanhoe!

Year 6 is an incredibly special year. It is a year of hard work, growing independence, exciting opportunities and lots of fun, as our children enjoy their final year with us and prepare for the next step in their journey.

As the oldest children at Ivanhoe, our Year 6 pupils have an important role to play within our school community. We encourage them to be positive role models: showing kindness and respect, making good choices, taking responsibility and setting a fantastic example for our younger children.

Growing in Independence 🌟

Throughout Year 6, we encourage children to become increasingly independent, confident and responsible.

This means taking greater ownership of their learning, being organised, looking after their belongings and having the confidence to persevere when things are challenging. These are important skills not only for success in Year 6, but also as children begin to prepare for their transition to secondary school.

We also place great importance on friendships, kindness and respect. Year 6 should be a year in which children feel happy, supported and proud to belong to their class and the wider Ivanhoe community.

Reading at Ivanhoe 📚

Reading is at the heart of life at Ivanhoe and is particularly important in Year 6.

Regular reading at home is crucial. Reading frequently helps children to build their fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, as well as supporting their learning across the entire curriculum. We ask families to make reading a regular part of life at home and encourage children to talk about the books they are enjoying.

But reading isn't only about developing skills — we want our children to become readers for life.

Through our dedicated Reading for Pleasure time, class storytimes and Ivanhoe Books for Pleasure, children will encounter a rich range of texts, including exciting contemporary authors, classic literature, poetry and non-fiction. We encourage children to discover their own reading tastes, recommend books to one another and, most importantly, experience the simple pleasure of getting lost in a brilliant book.

Our Year 6 children can also take an active role in shaping reading across our school, including opportunities to become Reading Ambassadors, championing pupil voice and helping us to continue developing our reading culture at Ivanhoe.

Homework & Times Tables ✏️

Regular engagement with homework is an important part of Year 6. Homework provides children with the opportunity to revisit and consolidate learning from school, develop good study habits and take increasing responsibility for completing tasks independently.

We really value the support of families in encouraging children to complete and return their homework regularly and to take pride in the work they produce.

A secure and rapid recall of times tables is also incredibly important in Year 6, as multiplication facts underpin so many areas of mathematics. Children should use TT Rock Stars regularly at home to practise and maintain their times-table fluency. Short, frequent practice makes a real difference and helps children to approach more complex maths with greater confidence and independence.

Alongside homework, regular reading and TT Rock Stars practice are two of the most valuable ways families can support learning at home.

Being a Year 6 Role Model 💫

Being in Year 6 comes with extra responsibility. We expect our children to:

• Work hard and always give their best.
• Be independent and take responsibility for their learning.
• Show kindness and respect to everyone in our school community.
• Build positive friendships and look out for one another.
• Read regularly at home and develop their own reading interests.
• Engage positively with homework and complete it to the best of their ability.
• Practise times tables regularly using TT Rock Stars.
• Set a positive example for younger pupils.
• Be resilient and keep going when learning becomes challenging.
• Take pride in themselves, their work and our school.

Our Year 6 PE days are Monday and Wednesday.

Children must have the correct Ivanhoe PE kit for their lessons. Please see the PE information on our school website for full details of the required kit.

Making Our Final Year Count ❤️

There will undoubtedly be challenges along the way, but there will also be lots of laughter, memorable experiences, new responsibilities and plenty to celebrate.

By the end of the year, our aim is for every child to leave Ivanhoe feeling proud of how far they have come and ready to take their next steps with confidence, independence and excitement.

We are incredibly excited about the year ahead and can't wait to see everything our Year 6 children achieve.
